1 Corinthians 13 is known by many as the Love Chapter, there are books, devotionals, blogs, and a barrage of information just on this one portion of a letter written to the Church in Corinth. I would like to take a deeper look into just four verses: ”Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away.“
1 Corinthians 13:4-8 NASB
The first part, love is patient, we all know Christ is love, and the patience He must have for us on some occasions, but we too are to be patient. Love is kind, what is an act of kindness you can show to another this week? Love is not jealous, oh that famous tongue-in-cheek saying “Must be nice…fill in the blank”…do not convent thy neighbor. Love does not brag and is not arrogant, if we must brag on a love, let us brag on the love Christ has shown to us.
Verse 5, oh that last part, it does not take into account a wrong suffered, that is a hard one. Have you had someone do you wrong? Has an injustice been had ACCORDING TO YOU? There are many injustices we could recall, but if we were to truly sit back we may realize that they all aren’t what they seem from a reasonable persons perspective.
We should though as Christian Men and Women not rejoice in unrighteousness but celebrate the Truth. The Truth is: “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.“ John 3:16 NASB. When we understand that Christ came for all of us, we then can understand how loving one another is so important.
Finally, Verse 8 sums it up. Love never fails. No matter what we do for the Kingdom if we don’t have love or do those things without love we have done it all for nothing. I encourage you today, to look at your neighbor and just say “God loves you, and so do I”
